In summer of 2013, Studio Ghibli released a new full featured animation movie called "The Wind Rises". The story is about a Japanese engineer who designs the Mitsubishi A5M, ancestor of the Mitsubishi A6M 'Zero-sen'. The main character’s friend develops Mitsubishi G3M (aka “Nell) bomber. The director Hayao Miyazaki is known to embed political or social messages in his movies, but most were about “global warming” issues or “protect the nature” themes. For Miyazaki to make a full length movie about military aircrafts was a surprise to many. It was no surprise that the movie stirred many debates about whether it was appropriate to make a movie about a “killing machine” for a release during summer vacation for kids to see. For fans of Doug Shinsato’s works like myself, the movie was very interesting as airplanes engineered in the movie play a large role in the events mentioned in Doug’s newest book “101 Lesser Known Facts Related to The Attack on Pearl Harbor”.
