Iwao Tomita--A Giant in Japan's Globalization Effort
Iwao Tomita was the founding partner and driving force behind Tohmatsu, the Japan arm of the global accounting and consulting firm, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. During the Pacific War, he was an officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy and, after the war, one of the first Japanese nationals to receive his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Tomita-san worked tirelessly and traveled non-stop to help build Tohmatsu and rebuild the Japanese economy and many of the companies that are now global giants.
He was my mentor and business god-father and helped me immensely while I was a partner at the firm. He also shared many stories of the war which helped me to understand why he was so dedicated to growing Tohmatsu and the firm's clients.
One of his final messages was, "My mission is accomplished."
