Last Saturday, my wife and I drove from Portland, Oregon to Seattle. We spent the afternoon with my cousin, Julie, and her husband, Tom Skerritt. Tom has starred in a number of blockbuster films--the most notable being Alien, MASH, Top Gun, and A River Runs Through It.
We talked for hours about Tom's passion for story-telling that is entertaining and precise--key elements missing from most Hollywood films today which rely heavily on special effects. He likes to say that he is a writer who has made a successful career as an actor. He founded and teaches writing at TheFilmSchool in Seattle.
Tom is also a co-founder of The Red Badge Project, which in his words:
"encourages Wounded Warriors to rediscover their personal voice and realize the value of their experiences and attendant emotions. For Wounded Warriors struggling to heal the invisible wounds of PTSD, Anxiety and Depression, believing in the value of their story and finding the means to communicate it to family, friends and community is a struggle of heroic proportions."
His new digital media company, Heyou, will produce short web-drama and web-comedy series for viewing on smartphones and tablets.
